Postpartum Core Curriculum
Postpartum Recovery
We begin by exploring what to expect during physical and emotional recovery after birth, including healing timelines, hormonal shifts, and practical ways to support rest and recovery during the postpartum period.
Newborn Care
This section focuses on understanding your newborn in the early days, including common medical procedures, what’s normal versus when to seek support, and how to confidently navigate early pediatric care. We also cover what newborns actually look like and how they function in the first weeks, helping to normalize newborn behavior, reflexes, sleep patterns, and early developmental changes.
Breastfeeding
We cover the foundations of breastfeeding: latch, positioning, feeding cues, and what to expect in the early days. We also review common challenges: soreness, engorgement, supply concerns, and troubleshooting early feeding issues, with an emphasis on practical guidance, confidence-building, and knowing when to seek additional support.
Feeding Beyond the Breast
We explore feeding options including pumping, bottle feeding, and combination feeding. We discuss building a pumping routine, storing and handling milk safely, introducing bottles, and creating a feeding plan that supports both baby’s needs and the families needs.
Support Systems
This section focuses on emotional well-being during the postpartum period, including normal mood changes, signs of postpartum mood disorders, and when to seek additional support. We also discuss building strong support systems, communicating needs, and identifying resources that help parents feel supported, connected, and cared for during this transition.
Mother’s Healing
This section helps parents become familiar with the physical changes that commonly occur during postpartum recovery, including what is considered normal as the body heals. We also discuss signs and symptoms that may fall outside of typical recovery and when it’s important to seek medical care or additional support.
