Long before I knew what a doula was I was operating in that role naturally with my friends. It started in 2009, when a dear friend asked me to attend her birth, and that is where my passion and joy for all things birth began. I then had the opportunity to attend several more of my friend’s births, and at the 9th birth (in 2016) the midwife asked me if I wanted to become a doula, and I quickly responded “What’s that?” since I had never heard the term before!

Two weeks after the birth, I attended training through CAPPA and have loved supporting women and their families in such a sacred space ever since. It wasn’t long after that I attended postpartum training through Birth Arts International and began supporting families as a postpartum doula.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with singletons, twins, and triplets. I truly love not only getting to provide newborn care but getting to support families during the postpartum period! My heart and passions in life are being a doula and walking alongside families. Over the last year and a half, I had the opportunity to step aside to pursue a career in nursing, and though it brought great joy, my heart ached to be alongside families, and I am so happy to be stepping back into this role.

When I’m not with babies and supporting other families, you can find me hanging out with my kiddos. My daughter started high school, and my son started middle school this year. They are my favorite humans and are at such fun ages!

I love Jesus, my kiddos - with my daughter starting college and my son in highs school!- all things birth, baby snuggles, Dr. Pepper, Red Bull, donuts, running (I am currently training for my first full marathon), listening to books on Audible, country music, communicating in gifs, memes, and emojis, and last but not least Fall is my favorite time of year!

What was your biggest take away from doula training?

In my training and years of experiance after training the thing I have learned, used, and implicated the most is non judgmental support. I came into the birth world with a lot of ideas about how things "should be" but I've come to realize that no two pregnancies, births, deliveries, or postpartum experiences are the same. It is my role to help to educate you on the choices you have available, make sure you understand what informed consent is, walk that out with you, and help facilitate YOUR birth preferences to the best of my ability.

One thing you wish you knew when you were pregnant or postpartum?

That Mom guilt is real, you need to make like Elisa and "let it go"! The thing I wish I would have learned much earlier than I did is "you do the best you can with the information you have at the time, and as that changes you change your approach."

We're all just doing the best we can, and that's enough. Everyone will be just fine, and if they're not we have some amazing therapists in the world that can help. For real.

Why should a client hire you?

I could speak to my training, years of experience, and amazing personality, ha. But... I think the reason someone should hire one doula vs another is because they meshed well together.

You're inviting someone into such a scared space, and asking them to walk out one of the most intimate, life-changing moments with you and that should be a person that you connect with, trust, and can rely on.

When interviewing doulas you should ask them all the questions that are important to you, but ultimately you should pay attention to how you feel when you're talking to that doula. As much as I would love to walk out your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum with you I would much rather you have the person in your birthing space that you want there. Go with your gut, you've got this.
