I love sharing a bit about becoming a doula. It was a unique journey that led me to grow passionate about supporting women and families in their journey from pregnancy to birth and postpartum! It first started when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I desired a birth where I felt empowered, supported, and informed with as little medical intervention as possible. Unfortunately, my prenatal care, labor, and birth experience were everything but that. Regardless of my experience, I still found birth to be such a beautiful thing, and I hoped I would one day have the chance to do it again.
In June of 2021, I began to feel the desire to help a family grow through surrogacy. Being a surrogate is quite the journey - several months of physical and psychological evaluations, meetings with lawyers, waiting to match with the intended family, hormone injections….and then a beautiful confirmation of pregnancy. After the experience I had when welcoming my daughter, I wanted this birth experience to be completely different, which led me to hire a Little Lilacs Doula. And you may see where this is going, but going through the process of a birth that was everything I desired the first time, it was in that moment that everything shifted for me. I knew I wanted to offer women the same support and knowledge I received from my doula during my second pregnancy.
My background in accounting for a transportation logistics company is most commonly thought of as managing numbers. This thought is accurate, but working in accounting has a unique overlap with birth work. For example, in my role, I worked with data along with numbers. I was responsible for addressing where things could change and improve to propel the company forward. There are many statistics on pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. One statistic in particular that came close to my heart as I began researching to become a doula was that black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Though I returned to my accounting role after my maternity leave, I continuously felt God was calling me to change into birth work.
A little backstory - my maternal grandmother was a civil rights activist and was the president of her class at Spelman College in the 50s. She traveled to Paris as a Merritt Scholar. Upon her return to the US, she wrote An Appeal for Human Rights, a document that eventually led to the abolishment of Jim Crow Laws in the south. I have always known I wanted to change the world in some way that benefits POC, and I am so grateful that it starts here.
Outside of being a doula, my passions in life include quality time with my daughter and loved ones, biking, yoga, cooking, mindful movement, and reading.
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." - 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
FUN FACT: My eyes have a condition called central heterochromia. I have copper deposition in my lens and when my eyes are exposed to natural sunlight, my pupils look like sunflowers.
Trainings:
BEST Certified Doula
What was your biggest take away from doula training?
The biggest takeaway I got from my training is that no matter the means in which someone chooses to give birth be it unmediated, homebirth, cesarean, etc., every woman is deserving of support that promotes confidence, empowerment and an overall sense of well-being even and especially when unexpected scenarios arise.
One thing you wish you knew when you were pregnant or postpartum?
Professional support from a birth and postpartum doula is an investment that extends so much further than just throughout the prenatal and immediate postpartum period. The feeling of having a designated professional to not only provide informational and physical support, but also facilitates connection, helps you sort through your wants and needs as well as how to execute a plan to make it happen, and who treats your emotional well-being as the highest priority is truly life changing.
Why should a client hire you?
A client should hire me because I feel it is the highest honor and privilege to step into another woman’s sacred birthing space. It is my goal to see to it that every woman feels that she has an unbiased, third party to provide tender, loving care the same way a mother would to her child. I am committed to providing women with the information they need to make informed decisions about their care that truly align with their desires, so that when the time comes to bring their precious baby earthside, they can shut their thinking brains off and surrender to the unfolding of birth.
Number one birth and postpartum book recommendation?
Birthful Podcast because it covers a wide range of topics from specific medical scenarios and how they were handled, to individual stories from mothers/professionals, to everything postpartum.
